Jesse Stahl was ... among the few early African Americans championing the rodeo circuit, riding the bucking broncos from 1913 through 1930. African Americans, due to many early discriminatory practices, were excluded from many all white rodeos. By 1956, Roy Le Blanc, a native Oklahoman, decided to organized the all black rodeo show. The place was Okmulgee, Oklahoma and the rodeo was called the Okmulgee Rodeo. It is the oldest all black rodeo being held in the United States today. Cowboys and also Cowgirls from all over the country come to Okmulgee to compete in a series of events which could include: calf roping, steer wrestling, bull riding, bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing, and team roping.

In November of 1990, the National Center for Health Statistics reported that while life expectancy for whites increased in the 1980s, life expectancy actually fell among African Americans during the latter half of the decade. African American men have a life expectancy of only 65.6 years—more than seven years lower than that of the average white American male (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1993). Census projections suggest that between 1995 and 2010, life expectancy should increase to 67.3 years for black men and 75.1 years for white men.

As nationalism has intensified during the 20th century, even more attention has been paid to African origins. The Haitian poet Jacques Roumain (1907–44) stressed the value of his native (African) culture, while expressing the pride and bitterness of his black ancestry. Nicolás Guillén (1902–89), one of Cuba's most eminent poets, wrote some of his best works as “black” poetry based on the rhythms of Afro-Cuban music. The novels, poetry, dance, and mime of Latin America and the Caribbean area have all incorporated African speech patterns, styles, or concepts and have tried to express the spirit of the black cultural heritage. In the Nobel Prize–winning poetry of Derek Walcott and the autobiographical short stories of Jamaica Kincaid (1949–), an effort is made to reconcile the differences between the writers' native West Indian and adoptive white milieus.

[W]hile caps may lower the amount of the markup, they may not end racial disparities between markups paid by Whites and those paid by African- Americans and Hispanics. During the 2001 to 2004 period, PRIMUS self-imposed a lowering of a cap on the markup from 5 percent to 3 percent on standard term loans (those of 60 months or less), effective March 1, 2003. But throughout the entire 2001 - 2004 period, African-Americans were consistently charged a higher markup than Whites at statistically significant levels regardless of which credit tier they fall under.
