African Americans: Studies
built 641 days ago
The value of religion, reading religious materials, listening to religious programs, prayer and other forms of non-organized religious participation are part of the fabric in the life and culture of older African Americans. Studies done in the early 1990s indicate that while the church is a significant contributor to feelings of well-being in elderly Blacks, the family network is viewed as more supportive than the church network (Walls & Zarit, 1991). Later reviews of the literature suggest that churches provide significant amounts of "non-kin" support to older African Americans. Particularly in rural communities, or communities with few services, churches play a special role, often serving as the "provider" of services. Ministers and church members form part of the caregiving and "expressive" or emotional support network needed by the older adult. The frequency of church attendance has been found to impact the amount and frequency of care received.

Schering-Plough, which supported the study by Muir and colleagues, is committed to improving outcomes of hepatitis C treatment in African Americans. The company's ongoing efforts include the WIN-R trial (Weight Based Dosing of PEG-INTRON and REBETOL), an investigator-initiated study supported by Schering-Plough that is the largest prospective clinical study in hepatitis C undertaken to date, involving approximately 4,900 patients from 250 centers throughout the United States. It includes the largest number of African American patients in any hepatitis C study to date. Results in African American study participants are expected to be reported in the near future.

Resources for the study of the African American experience are rich, varied, and abundant at The Bancroft Library. For many years, The Library has been actively building a research-level collection in African-Americana consisting of major published source materials, manuscripts, photographs and assorted ephemera. The collections document a variety of areas but fall chiefly in the humanities, social sciences, law, botany, and health sciences.
The group found that IgG antibodies in the spinal fluid were on average 29% higher in African Americans than in Caucasian Americans. The study ... confirmed previous reports that African Americans tended to need walking aids sooner than Caucasians (on average, African Americans had MS for nine years before needing ambulatory assistance such as a cane, compared to 17 years for Caucasians). However, the study did not find that higher antibody levels could predict earlier need for ambulatory assistance.

WASHINGTON, July 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A study released today by the Federal Trade Commission confirms that African American and Hispanic drivers pay more for auto insurance because insurers use credit scores to determine premiums. The use of credit scores in insurance has long been a controversial practice because of its discriminatory impact on low income and minority families. "It's not fair that consumers with spotless driving records can be penalized with higher premiums just because of their credit score," said Norma Garcia, Senior Staff Attorney with Consumers Union. "Insurance premiums should be based on the risk of an accident, not a consumer's bill paying record for other goods and services. The FTC report concluded that African Americans and Hispanics are substantially overrepresented among consumers with the lowest credit scores. It found that "more than one-half of all African Americans have credit scores in the lowest quarter of the overall score distribution, and one-half of all Hispanics have credit scores in the lowest third of the overall score distribution."
