Hispanics had the most difficulty paying for prescription drugs with more than four in ten saying they had problems paying for a prescription in the past year; while 38 percent of African Americans experienced difficulty paying for drugs. When asked about their ability to pay for prescription drugs over the next two years, 61 percent of Hispanics and 68 percent of African American expressed concern.
Twenty-eight percent of African Americans reported having a proctoscopic examination within the past five years. Although the rate of colorectal screening tests has improved, the percentage of African Americans being screened still remains low. (9)

Organized religion has always been a strong institution among African Americans. More than 75 percent of black Americans belong to a church, and nearly half attend church services each week ("America's Blacks: A World Apart," Economist, March 30, 1991). Black congregations reflect the traditional strength of community ties in their continued devotion to social improvement—evident in the launching of youth programs, anti-drug crusades, and parochial schools, and in ongoing efforts to provide the needy with food, clothing, and shelter.
The "Baby Steps to Heart Health" survey ... found that many African Americans still underestimate their risk for developing cardiovascular disease. Only 22 percent of the at-risk respondents surveyed believed they were personally in danger of developing heart disease and many missed the link between certain health conditions and heart disease, further highlighting the need for more education around risk factors. By the 1530s, the Portuguese were ... using African slaves in Brazil. From then until the abolition of the slave trade in 1870, at least 10 million Africans were forcibly brought to the Americas: about 47 percent of them to the Caribbean islands and the Guianas; 38 percent to Brazil; and 6 percent to mainland Spanish America. About 4.5 percent went to North America, roughly the same proportion that went to Europe.
