African Americans: Nations
built 642 days ago
Seattle’s politics of fair employment entered a new phase when African American construction workers and activists began to protest racially exclusionary hiring practices in Seattle’s construction unions in the fall of 1969. Led by electrician Tyree Scott, workers used direct action to challenge institutional barriers to African American employment in Seattle. In the process, they became pioneers in shaping the early national politics of affirmative action. This unit includes interviews, documents, a short history of the UCWA, and full reproductions of the UCWA newspaper No Separate Peace.
The contest is open to participants of all races/ethnicities, but submissions must address the issue of HIV/AIDS in urban communities and strongly reflect African-American themes. Individuals are encouraged to submit screenplays, treatments or story outlines that could later be produced into a 20 to 25-minute short film for television. Two winners will be selected from the pool of submissions and BET will contribute up to $25,000 toward the production of the winning short films. The winning films will be shot on Digital Video (DV) format and will televise on the BET network around National HIV Testing Day, which is June 27, 2004. The winning films will ... be submitted to independent film festivals around the world.
Zimmer's Back in the Groove outreach initiative will consist of a multi-layered program linking physicians trained in Zimmer procedures to African American joint replacement candidates. The grassroots campaign will feature Zimmer partnering with local media and community organizations to help spread the word. Activities will culminate with a community health care event, which will feature local partnerships with faith-based and health organizations, including the National Medical Association. Those who attend the event, which will be free and open to the public, can receive one-on-one consultation from medical professionals, along with free health screenings, information and other interactive health activities.
