African Americans: African-American

Dealing with the issue of skin color had been presented from many angles in motion pictures with African-Americans as the major target. In 1937, Micheaux produced the film, God's Step Children. The movie was highly criticized by Blacks due to its blatant coverage of a sensitive topic. The theme centered around a mulatto woman who adamantly rejected her black origins. The cast included many light-skinned actors and dance girls. The movie was seen as exploiting the issue of color, and Micheaux took heed and withdrew God's Step Children from distribution.

The reasons for the higher rate of glaucoma and subsequent blindness among African-Americans are still unknown. However, researchers are becoming more and more certain that African-Americans are genetically more likely to be susceptible to glaucoma, making early detection and treatment all the more important. For example, there may be a greater susceptibility to optic nerve damage, which causes vision loss, for blacks with glaucoma.

Most African-American artists could not afford to release their creative energy in the direction of purely social protest art or expressive impressionistic moods in art. African-American artists seeking this freedom of expression later discovered that Rome, Munich, and especially Paris were places where they could find new vistas of respect as just artists, who happen to be African-Americans. PARIS was THE PLACE for learning, observing, and experimenting with their talents and theories of Art. Europe was no longer remote but a place of longing for all African-American artists.

Captain Hugh Mulzac, an African-American, served as master of the ship for four years, delivering troops and supplies to the war zones. Adrian T. Richardson, John Godfrey, and Clifton Lastic ... captained mixed-race crews during WWII.
