For much of the last 23 years Afghanistan was plagued by natural and manmade disasters ranging from war and drought, to earthquakes and terrorism. The Soviet invasion and occupation exacted a heavy toll on the people of this Texas-sized nation. Millions fled to Iran, Pakistan and other countries. Many still remain as refugees.

The final mountain stronghold of the "Al Qaeda" terrorists, "Tora Bora" (sounding more like Polynesia than Afghanistan), eventually broke under American bombing and Afghan ground attacks. The leader of the terrorists, Usama ben Laden, has disappeared. Either he was killed, was able to flee (to Pakistan or elsewhere), or is still hiding in the mountains. The leader of the Tâlibân, the Mulla Omar... fled and is apparently in hiding, though not far enough in hiding not to be negotiating surrender or safe passage. Meanwhile, the Northern Alliance with international help has put together a coalition government. There was some talk about restoring the King as a figurehead, but that has not happened.

Afghanistan's neighbors acted quickly to seal borders. They feared an overwhelming human flow that would flood already strained economies and contribute to political unrest. Since 1979, the 3_4 million Afghans in Pakistan, Iran, and other nations have constituted the largest single refugee group in the world.
