Aerosmith: Aerosmith's
built 813 days ago
While Aerosmith was at the height of its revitalized popularity in the early '90s, the group signed a lucrative multi-million dollar contract with Columbia Records even though they still owed Geffen two albums. It wasn't until 1995 that the band was able to begin working on their first record under the new contract -- nearly five years after the contract was signed. The making of Aerosmith albums usually had been difficult affairs, but the recording of Nine Lives was plagued with bad luck. The band went through a number of producers and songwriters before settling on Kevin Shirley in 1996. More damaging... was the dismissal of the band's manager Tim Collins who had been responsible for bringing the band from the brink of addiction. Upon his firing, Collins insinuated that Steven Tyler was using hard drugs again, an allegation that Aerosmith adamantly denied.

Aerosmith is a classic hard rock band that has been the model American rock band for generations of younger rock bands for over three decades. The band first came together in 1970 in Boston, when vocalist Steven Tyler met up with guitarist Joe Perry. Tyler already had his first taste of recording, when he recorded the single "When I Needed You" with his band Chain Reaction. Perry was jamming with a local band on the side while working in an ice cream shop. According to rumors, Tyler visited Perry's ice cream shop and proceeded to mess up the place. Perry and Tyler almost went to blows over the incident, until Perry found out that Tyler was a singer.

The New York native said on Tuesday that Britney Spears, Busta Rhymes, 'NSYNC, Run-D.M.C., Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Vanessa Williams, Joan Rivers, Macaulay Culkin, Kevin Bacon and Sister Sledge themselves have all joined the project. The cover tune will be recorded in two sessions — one on Saturday in New York and the other on Sunday in L.A. Rodgers said he's still trying to decide which charities should benefit, though he made it clear he wants the money to help the survivors and families of those killed in the WTC disaster.

For over three decades, Aerosmith have been one of rock's most revered and wildly popular bands, crafting timeless songs full of raw guitars and fiercely energetic vocals. The band first reached stardom in the '70s with a string of chart-topping songs, including "Dream On, "Sweet Emotion" and "Walk This Way." During this period, Aerosmith's music defied easy categorization, falling somewhere between bluesy hard rock and early-era punk (with occasional ballads here and there). In 1986, Aerosmith came back in a big way, appearing on Run D.M.C.'s cover of "Walk This Way," a creative fusion of hip hop and rock that has undoubtedly inspired countless rap-metal acts. Hits from Aerosmith's own albums during the '80s include "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)," "Angel," "Rag Doll," "Love in an Elevator" and "Janie's Got a Gun." Entering the '90s, Aerosmith's popularity only grew as they released hit singles such as "Amazing," "Livin' on the Edge" and "Cryin'." In 1998, Aerosmith contributed four tracks to the film Armageddon—starring singer Steven Tyler's daughter Liv Tyler—including the chart topper "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing."

In 1991, Columbia Records released Aerosmith's first ever box set, titled Pandora's Box. This set featured a lot of rare tracks, including Steven Tyler's first song with Chain Reaction. It seemed as if Columbia was trying to get Aerosmith to return to the label, but the band was still tied to Geffen for a few more releases. In 1993 came the album Get A Grip, another successful release, with the hits "Eat The Rich" and "Amazing". In 1994, Aerosmith released their last album for Geffen, a greatest hits compilation titled Big Ones, with two new songs, including "Blind Man". That year, Columbia released another box set, Box Of Fire, which featured remastered versions of all of their Columbia albums, as well as more rare tracks from the band's vault.

On October 17, 2006, the compilation album Devil's Got a New Disguise - The Very Best of Aerosmith was released. The album contained previously released hits with the addition of 2 new songs, "Devil's Got a New Disguise" and "Sedona Sunrise", which were older outtakes re-recorded for the album. "Devil's Got a New Disguise" peaked at #15 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The album was intended to fulfill Aerosmith's contract with Sony and tide fans over until the band's new studio album is released.
