Advent Rising
built 207 days ago
One of the unique points of Advent Rising is the superhuman powers that players gain access to. In the tradition of Star Wars and the Jedi Knight series, players will gain access to limited powers at first and gain access to more advanced powers as the game progresses. The powers in Advent Rising use the same system as firearms in the game, so the learning curve is wonderfully short. Each power is useful when first attained, and greater mastery brings greater power. After a time it is even possible to completely do away with weapons in the game. As Gideon’s power increases he will become a devastating warrior, capable of decimating his foes.

One thing that Advent Rising definitely has going for it is a huge, epic storyline. You play as a hot shot space pilot named Gideon who is enjoying a fairly nice life until an alien spacecraft shows up in orbit one day. Luckily, these aliens are friendly, but they are actually there to warn the humans about another race of aliens that are coming to attack. The rest of the story follows Gideon through the initial attack and beyond as he tries to stop the enemy aliens and discovers that powers hidden deep within himself might be what they are searching for.

In the grand scope of things, Advent Rising does have a big budget feel to it, which includes the in-game Dolby Digital 5.1. Nicely, Majesco really pumped up the sound effects and in game audio to support that 5.1 surround sound. Voice acting comes across as reasonable considering the cusp of humanity is about to go down the drain.

In Advent Rising, you play as Gideon Wyeth, a rookie space pilot. Gideon has a loving fiancée and life smiles. That is, until mysterious aliens appear. Gideon and his brother, a hero space pilot, are invited to the historical greeting party. Though the aliens are friendly, they come with a warning about another, vicious race, known as "the Seekers", who have decided to exterminate humans. Soon after, the Seekers invasion begins, and so does the actual game.

Visually, Advent Rising is disappointing. Most of the main character models have a bland, plastic-like look to them, and many of their key animations like jumping and diving appear to be broken. Also, far too few character models were created in general, so be prepared to see the same two people (one male and one female) populating the supposedly “bustling” environments. Lighting is another sore point, with shadows appearing as flickering, glitchy messes when they do appear at all. Worst of all is the framerate, which frequently bogs down to levels that would make a traditional first/third person shooter unplayable. The flick targeting system allows for the gameplay to remain largely unaffected by the shoddy framerate, but it still remains an eyesore.
