Typical for a Lyne film, Unfaithful has inspired mixed reactions. While critics have raved about Lane's performance, opinion has been split about the movie itself. The film had a good opening weekend of $US14.1 million ($25 million) in the US, but in tracking polls men showed little interest in seeing a movie in which a beautiful wife cheats on a husband who's a doting provider.

[A]fter the endless takes comes choosing exactly the right one and Lyne has a habit of asking lots of people what they think. Lane laughs. "Oh, he asks everyone what they think," she says. "Then he ignores whatever they say and does whatever he wants."
