The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is the sole beneficiary of the Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge. Dave Thomas, founder of Wendy's(R) Old Fashioned Hamburgers, created the Foundation in 1992 in support of the vision that every child deserves a permanent home and a loving family. The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption focuses on increasing foster care adoption awareness while supporting model adoption service programs. More than 140,000 children in North America are waiting in foster care for safe, loving adoptive families and the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is dedicated to assuring an adoptive home for every waiting child.

Adoption by same-sex couples is legal in Guam, Andorra, Belgium, Iceland, the Netherlands, Sweden, South Africa, Spain, the United Kingdom and some parts of Canada and the United States. In Denmark, Germany, Israel and Norway "stepchild-adoption" is permitted, so that the partner in a civil union can adopt the natural (or sometimes even adopted) child of his or her partner. In the Republic of Ireland and some other countries, individual persons, whether heterosexual/homosexual, cohabiting/single may apply for adoption.

[S]ince the Adoption and Safe Families Act was enacted in 1997 adoptions had risen until they peaked in 2002. Although the number of adoptions has not continued to follow the trend they have remained steady. Several programs and subsidies have either been proposed or enacted in an effort to aid those who are willing to adopt and those who are in need of adoption.
