Since it began in 1997, the Adopt-A-Pilot program has reached more than 65,000 students in communities from coast-to-coast. Southwest Airlines originally developed the Adopt-A-Pilot program in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education, America's Promise, the Smithsonian Institute's National Air and Space Museum, and others in response to the need for community involvement in schools. National leaders such as Secretary of State Colin Powell, former President Bill Clinton, and First Lady Laura Bush have recognized the community relations program.
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Raising awareness of a pervasive global problem while raising hopes for a safer world, the fifth annual Adopt-A-Minefield® gala took place last night, November 15th, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. A leader in addressing the worldwide landmine crisis, the organization raised approximately $2 million through the evening's ticket sales and auction items, plus an additional $1 million dollars generously donated by Gibson Guitars. Adopt-A-Minefield hopes to raise more through an online auction that kicked off last night and will run through November 29. MC'd by Jay Leno, the gala was hosted by Adopt-A-Minefield Goodwill Ambassadors Heather Mills McCartney and Paul McCartney, who shared the stage with Tony Bennett as the evening's headline performers.

The Collaboration to AdoptUsKids is a multi-faceted, five-year, federally funded project, whose purpose is to recruit families to adopt the children waiting in foster care for permanency. The Collaboration is managed by the Baltimore-based Adoption Exchange Association (AEA), through a cooperative agreement with the Children's Bureau of HHS.

According to Adopt-A-Classroom, the nation will need 2.2 to 2.4 million more new teachers by 2010. However, fifty percent of teachers leave the profession within the first five years. Among the top reasons for leaving the profession is lack of support.
In conjunction with the Adopt-A-Family initiative, Starbucks kicked off the start of the holiday season with a worldwide customer call to "Pass the Cheer." Starbucks wants to spark customers to think of simple ways to spread goodwill across the globe such as making a donation to support a local YMCA family or buying a neighbor a cup of coffee.
