Actively marketed to provide "a comfortable night's sleep", the choice in adjustable beds has exploded over the last 30 years (although they've been in use in hospitals much longer than that). People looking for an alternative to the flat bed experience, or maybe just wanting a bit more luxury, find that laying in a bed that can recline, elevate, heat and massage doesn't feel too shabby. Many ... swear by the relief an adjustable bed provides for numerous health issues. For example, people suffering from acid reflux, (GERD), may benefit from using an adjustable bed, as elevating the upper body can assist in keeping acid down. Compared to a standard bed, these types of beds can provide comfort and support for individuals with back pain, osteoarthritis and multiple sclerosis.

Power beds, otherwise known as adjustable beds, add another dimension to your bedroom environment and sleeping comfort. One obvious benefit is the ability to sit up in bed to read, eat, or watch television... adjustable beds also help improve sleep. The ability to elevate your legs relieves back pressure, as well as improves circulation. Allowing your body to rest in a contour, or “fetal” position, the adjustable bed reduces the need to sleep on your side, eliminating the added pressure that comes with side-sleeping. Certain physical conditions can also be alleviated with adjustable beds.

Unlike standard flat beds, adjustable beds sustain the natural curves of the body without causing aches or pains. By simply elevating the leg, the blood circulation flows more freely, resulting in comfort and ability to relax pain free. With an adjustable bed, the body's weight is dispersed equally ... making breathing easier. Not only is it excellent for the orthopaedic qualities, but it is excellent for everyday use too.

As the name suggests, an adjustable bed (... called a Semi-Fowler bed, as it places the patient in a semi-Fowler position) can be adjusted to a number of different positions. For individuals with certain types of back problems, sleeping on an adjustable bed that is at a slight incline (e.g. 30 to 45 degrees) may be comfortable, with the upper body positioned higher up than the lower body (as when sitting in a recliner) and some support under the knees to bend the knees at a slight angle. The combination of upper body incline and the knee support can help take some of the stress off the lower back. Provided that the patient is comfortable sleeping in this manner through the night, this position can support the curves osf the spine and relieve pressure on the entire body.
