The scenery and pace of life in the North Country of the Adirondack Mountains are a tonic for urban residents. This is the region of the fabled "High Peaks" wilderness. Most people don't know how big the Adirondack Mountains are. The area stretches over 6 million acres, which makes it bigger than the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite and the Great Smoky Mountains preserves combined. This includes thousands of lakes and ponds for fishing, as well as more than 2,000 miles of hiking trails, winding through the terrain of rugged mountains and deep woodlands.

The Adirondacks are not part of the Appalachian Mountains, despite being just across Lake Champlain from the Green Mountains and just across the Mohawk River from the Catskills, both Appalachian ranges. Aside from the broad valleys that separate the Adirondacks from its neighbors, the geology of the range is very distinct--steep, rocky slabs of exposed bedrock and a more jumbled topography give the Adirondacks the same general wild, rugged character and feeling of the Canadian Shield territory to the north.

The mountains were given the name Adirondacks in 1838 by Ebenezer Emmons; the name is sometimes spelled "Adirondaks", without a "c". Some of the place names in the vicinity of Lake Placid have peculiar phonetic spellings attributed to Melville Dewey, who was a principal influence in developing that town and the Lake Placid Club. The Adirondak Loj (pronounced "Lodge"), a popular hostel and trailhead run by the Adirondack Mountain Club in the high peaks region, is one example.
