Adderall: Taking Adderall
built 636 days ago
Adderall Attorney - Adderall Lawsuit About 1 million people, primarily children, use Adderall – mostly taking the extended, one-capsule-a-day form Adderall XR – in the United States. The medication is manufactured by England-based Shire Pharmaceuticals Group PLC. (A subsidiary, Shire US Inc. is based in Wayne, Pa.)
Due to growing concern about Adderall sudden deaths, Health Canada (the Canadian equivalent to FDA) issued an Adderall recall in February 2005 . Adderall was pulled off the shelves after numerous reports of sudden deaths in children taking Adderall. After six months of evaluating these serious Adderall risks, Adderall was allowed to return to the Canadian market, since regulators were unable to prove that Adderall was any more dangerous than similar medications.
Never take Adderall if you are taking a drug used to treat depression, called a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI), or if you have stopped taking an MAOI in the last 14 days. Taking Adderall near the time of taking a MAOI can result in serious, possibly fatal reactions.
It is natural for parents to question whether taking a powerful stimulant like Adderall medication is in their child's best interests. Amphetamine stimulants like Adderall are worrisome for many reasons – predominately because of the potential for harmful Adderall side effects and high potential for Adderall abuse.
You may have read that the Canadian drug regulatory agency has suspended the sale of Adderall XR (controlled release) following reports of sudden deaths among children taking the drug for ADHD. Of the 12 youngsters who died, five had underlying heart defects, which increase the risk of sudden death. After investigating the deaths, the FDA concluded that the total was only slightly higher, per million prescriptions, than the number reported for Ritalin (methylphenidate), the other drug commonly used to treat ADHD in children and that the rate of deaths among children on Adderall was no higher than the number expected to occur among children who were not taking any drugs. So far, the FDA has not taken action against the drug, but Adderall XR's label has been changed to include the warning that children with underlying heart defects might be at particular risk for sudden death and shouldn't ordinarily take any form of Adderall. The manufacturer notes that you should not use Adderall if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, glaucoma, or an overactive thyroid gland. Other medications can interact with Adderall so follow your doctor's instructions closely.

Health Canada has suspended marketing of Adderall XR products from the Canadian market due to concern about reports of sudden unexplained death (SUD) in children taking Adderall and Adderall XR. SUD has been associated with amphetamine abuse and reported in children with underlying cardiac abnormalities taking recommended doses of amphetamines, including Adderall and Adderall XR. In addition, a very small number of cases of SUD have been reported in children without structural cardiac abnormalities taking Adderall. At this time, FDA cannot conclude that recommended doses of Adderall can cause SUD, but is continuing to carefully evaluate these data.
