Acura: New Acura

Acura is going to let anyone inside the Detroit, Chicago, New York, or Los Angeles Auto Shows have a crack at configuring a 2008 Acura. The mobile displays allow potential customers to spec out a vehicle and select the color of the finished car right inside the Acura display area. Of course the same thing can be done on the Acura website, but perhaps there’s something to specing out a car you’re actually looking at that will convert more of these shoppers into buyers.
Unfortunately, after this strong start, the mid- to late 1990s, Acura's model line-up became less and less inspiring and consequently, sales suffered. During this time, Acura switched to an alphanumeric formula for nomenclature. The 1996 3.5RL, which replaced the well-loved Legend, was seen by many as the epitome of Acura's new-found blandness. Its sluggish 210-horsepower V6 (later bumped to 225 hp) and front-wheel drive, together with anonymous styling that cautiously aped the larger, more powerful and more engaging Lexus LS 400, did little against more prestigious, attractive and faster offerings from BMW, Audi, and Lexus, among others. Even the swoopy NSX lost sales as Acura barely changed the car from its original 1989 trim.

2009-acura-rlhl-001.jpg While Acura just unveiled its refreshed 2009 RL, and plans to unveil the all-new TSX in New York, Japan’s Best Car Magazine is already speculating about the next generation RL. While the rendering looks awfully similar to the Accord which is sold in Japan as the Inspire the big news is what may be underneath. The magazine has reason to believe the car will be offered with a 4.5-liter V-8 engine estimated to have over 400 horsepower.
