"Acting is easy," proclaimed another "cool" guy, Brando, the best known Method actor. Pre-acting is difficult. If you indeed WORK hard on it, the acting will be easy and "natiral"! Do you want an example?

The word acting is derived from the Latin word agĕre meaning "to do." In acting, an actor suppresses or augments aspects of their personality in order to reveal the actions and motivations of the character for particular moments in time. The actor is said to be "assuming the role" of another, usually for the benefit of an audience, but ... because it can bring one a sense of artistic satisfaction. The first actor is believed to be Thespis of Icaria, a man of ancient Greece. "Plays" of this time, called choric dithyrambs, involved a chorus of 50 who sang the story to the audience. The possibly apocryphal story says that Thespis stepped out of the chorus and spoke to them as a separate character in the story.
camchair.jpg - 10.31 K Auditions are free and last half an hour. Please bring a headshot and acting resume, if you have these marketing materials. But if you don't, audition anyway.... The Acting Studio accepts talented beginners and advanced actors. Part of the training at TAS includes consultations on the business of acting (headshots, resumes, agencies, unions, etc.). You have two audition choices: 1) Bring a prepared, rehearsed monologue suitable to your look and type.... one to two minutes; or 2) Plan on doing a "cold reading" on camera. In either case, I'll give you some coaching, and an opportunity to do two or three takes. This gives me a sense of your talent level, and you -- an opportunity to experience my teaching techniques.

Modern professional acting began in the 16th cent. with the Italian commedia dell’arte, whose actors improvised convincing and entertaining situations from general outlines. During the Restoration period in England, Thomas Betterton and his wife Mary were famous for their naturalness of delivery, as was Edward Kynaston. Their contemporaries, Charles Hart, Barton Booth, and James Quin... were well known for their lofty, heroic acting, a style that became dominant in the first third of the 18th cent. In the mid-18th cent. Charles Macklin and his pupil David Garrick introduced a more naturalistic style, and similar movements took place in France and Germany.
