Reflecting the rapidly evolving landscape of contemporary performance practice, the Acting Program has moved beyond the training structures used for preparing actors for repertory theater companies. Instead, the actor of the 21st century needs to be highly versatile, able to work in any number of forms, styles and settings. This actor must be technologically literate, have a strong command of body, voice and speech, and be equally adept in theater, film, television and emerging media.

The drama program's Acting courses instruct students in basic and advanced acting techniques. These courses teach students improvisational skills for theatre and film. The acting courses focus on auditioning and give students the skills necessary to compete in the fast paced self driven world of acting.

The Acting Program at CalArts offers classically centered training with an eye towards the future, designed for preparing young artists for the performance challenges of the 21st century. The aim of this program is to guide students in becoming versatile, well-rounded theater artists who have the skills to chart their own creative and professional paths—actors who can be, at once, the storytellers in the cave and the innovators using the best of modern technology. Accordingly, the program seeks talented performers who are engaged with their imaginations, guided by their passions and compelled to speak their stories.

Chances of succeeding as an actor are greatly enhanced by studying drama at a university or college, or attending an acting conservatory. Conservatories offer two to three years training on all aspects of acting. Universities will offer three to four year programs, where a student can choose to focus on acting, while still learning about other aspects of theatre. Schools will vary in their approach, but in North America the most popular method taught is the 'inside out' technique, developed by Stanislavski in his early years and popularized in America by Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler. Others may include a more physical approach, following the teachings of Jerzy Grotowski and others. Regardless of a school's approach, students should expect intensive training in textual interpretation, voice and movement.

This program explores the basic skills of acting. Monologues, scenes and exercises are used to examine the techniques an actor uses to establish a character. Those skills are found in the physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual aspects of the human condition. Exercises include movement, sense memory, personalization, objective, beat work and beginning text analysis. You’ll learn about auditioning and working in the business as well. For actors who have been out of the classroom for a while, this can be a great refresher.
