For Acer, the low-tech parts of a computer — the casings, the keyboards, the disk drives — are buns and pickles, made in Taiwan and sent by ship to the company's 34 assembly plants around the world. The beef is the motherboard, the part inside the computer that holds the processors and memory chips. Motherboards, which do not account for a large portion of the computers' weight, are shipped by air from Taiwan, while the central processors and hard drives are treated like cheese and are purchased near assembly sites.

In Greenpeace’s first Guide to Greener Electronics, Acer was ranked 12th out of the 14 top mobile and PC producers worldwide. Taiwan-based computer manufacturer Acer has some big plans to storm the top tiers of global PC companies with its announced acquisition plans of Gateway. Gateway, for those who don't remember, is based in Irvine, California, but started out on a farm in the Midwest.

In 2002, the pan Acer Group employed 39,000 people supporting dealers and distributors in more than 100 countries.

Judged on its technical innovation by Japan's highly regarded Nikkei Byte magazine, this year represents Acer's third consecutive win in the Best Mobile PC category.
