Ace Combat: Operation Katina is the arcade mode version of the game puts the player in control of Ace Combat 04's pilot "Mobius 1," the legendary Ace fighter pilot who brought the ISAF to victory singlehandedly. The player's mission is to play through a number of stages filled with enemies and defeat a certain number of them in order to advance to the next stage. As the player progresses the game naturally gets more difficult and the player will have to adopt new techniques for countering the increasingly aggressive enemies' attacks. The mini-game is split into four branches, levels 1-4: 1 being the least difficult and 4 the most challenging. "SkyEye", the AWACS from Ace Combat 04 returns as well and provides mission support for the duration of the game.

The Ace Combat games have always been at the forefront of graphical beauty and realism, and Ace Combat Zero sure doesn't doing anything to damage the franchise's proud legacy. Though not vastly improved from the last game, this game's graphics are top-shelf quality for the PS2. Plane models are incredibly detailed and realistic, supported by exceptional lighting, engine blur and wind and cloud effects. Aerial combat is visual bliss thanks to spectacular smoke trails and explosions, both of which are further intensified by impressive combat sound effects. The only things worth complaining about, as far as presentation goes, are the realistic albeit sometimes confusing radio chatter and the ground textures that quickly show their ugliness upon close inspection. [But if you get too close, you won't see them for long!

Unlike the Campaign Mode of Ace Combat 5, the player starts off with a low ammunition count and must carefully make his or her shots meet their mark. However, throughout the various levels there are different aircraft and ships that can be destroyed by the player to collect extra weapons from these special targets. The special target will be marked as for example, "C-130 M." In this case the C-130 is carrying extra missiles and shooting it down will result in the player being restocked with 10 missiles. The player can refill missiles and special weapons only; the machine gun uses unlimited ammunition.

Anyone who has had the pleasure of playing Ace Combat 2 will be disappointed with the modifications to the control scheme. Bizarrely, the controls have taken a step toward being more sim-like, defaulting to the same setup found on Ace Combat 2's expert control setting. Setting AC3's control to easy mode won't help restore that arcade-like control, either. In both modes, the R2 and L2 buttons control left and right banking, along with the D-pad or analog pad, naturally. The L1 and R1 buttons control the thrust. If using the Dual Shock pad, you use the left analog to control steering (although it might seem fairly sensitive to some), while the right analog controls the exterior view.

Where the past Ace Combat titles were limited by the hardware, this throws dozens of planes around the skies of Gracemeria with abandon. Finally set free of technical restraints, Namco have constructed battlefields laced with canyons and littered with vehicles, buildings and trees. Ace Combat 6 is one of the best looking games on 360, and for the first time, the world is complex enough to be a truly functional space.
