It appears, on the button accordion (called 'bayan' in Russia) music of all genres could be performed: from original chamber music up to folk songs. But the piano accordion does not allow such diversity. So, and what to do with a young piano accordionist, if he wants to play everything that has been written for accordion? One choice would be to make changes in the text of the piece. Alternatively, one can start retraining to play the bayan, having refused the former skills he has been painstakingly developing before. Or else… one can master performing on an unique keyboard in a short period!

Cyril Demian patented the first actual accordion in 1829 in Vienna. The earliest accordions had ten melody buttons and two bass buttons. Later versions added more buttons, enabling players to produce an even wider variety of notes and chords. The piano accordion was developed in the 1850s.

The two main types of accordion are single-action and double-action. In single-action accordions, each button produces two notes, one on the push and another on the draw. In double-action accordions, each key or button produces the same note on the push as on the draw. The most familiar type of accordion, the piano accordion, is a double-action accordion. While the chromatic accordions, such as the Piano accordion or the Continental chromatic accordion, are the standard instrument in the United States, other types are available. Diatonic accordions are still manufactured since they are often used in folk music. Common types include the melodeon, the continental club model, and the British chromatic. A recent invention are the electronic piano accordions. Two types are made, one which has a normal bellows and reeds, but ... an electronic tone generator. Another is fully electronic, and the bellows only serves to control the instrument's volume.
