The only thing standing between the man who used to have a bit part on The Facts of Life and his first Academy Award... is a little balding guy named Paul Giamatti. After back-to-back outright snubs for beloved, deeply nuanced performances in American Splendor (2003) and Sideways (2004), the Academy has finally seen fit to acknowledge Giamatti for his role as boxing manager Joe Gould in the tragically underseen Cinderella Man. (Talk about snubs: Giamatti's nomination was only one of the three for yet another of the year's best movies, and the only one not in technical categories.)

The only Academy Award winner who won but was never officially nominated was Hal Mohr for Best Cinematography for A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935). Mohr was the first and only person to win via a write-in vote.

Until the 8th Academy Awards ceremony (1935), nominations for the Best Actress award were intended to include all actresses, whether the performance was in either a leading or supporting role. At the 9th Academy Awards ceremony (1936)... the Best Supporting Actress category was specifically introduced as a distinct award following complaints that the single Best Actress category necessarily favored leading performers with the most screen time. Nonetheless, May Robson had received a Best Actress nomination (Lady for a Day, 1933) for her performance in a clear supporting role. Currently, Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, and Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role constitute the four Academy Awards of Merit for acting annually presented by AMPAS.

The very first person to receive an Academy Award didn't attend the first Academy Awards ceremony. Emil Jannings, the winner for Best Actor in the 1927-28 Academy Awards, had decided to go back to his home in Germany before the ceremony. Before he left for his trip, Jannings was handed the very first Academy Award.

Overall, The Departed (4) garnered the most Academy Awards, as this clairvoyant critic envisioned, followed by Pan’s Labyrinth (3). Dreamgirls (2) was undoubtedly the big loser, given Eddie’s precipitous fall from grace, the reunion faux pas, and the musical’s trio of tunes being beaten by one from Al Gore’s documentary.
