Abraham Lincoln: Springfield Il
built 137 days ago
While living in Springfield, Abraham Lincoln made the acquaintance of many people in different walks of life. Some of these people were to become his allies - and some his opponents - in political activities and in his work as a lawyer. In the years that he was getting established, Lincoln ... met an attractive young woman named Mary Todd. They had many interests in common that brought them together and in 1842 they were married. Within the next year their first son, Robert, was born.

Beginning with his birth on a cornhusk mattress in Kentucky, nineteen vignettes of Abraham Lincoln's life form this seemingly simple biography. The authors pick very telling events from his life that depict his character-including his humor. The conversational style is intimate. The tall format of the book, with exquisite, muted pictures of ink and watercolor washes, enables the artist to emphasize Lincoln's size through interesting perspectives and the bits of Lincoln's body that spill out of the framed illustrations. A successful melding of text with illustration.

Abraham Lincoln was born on Feb. 12, 1809, in a log cabin on a farm in Hardin County, Ky. His father had come with his parents from Virginia and had grown to manhood on the Kentucky frontier. He had evidently become moderately successful as a farmer and carpenter, for in 1803 he was able to pay £118 cash for a farm near Elizabethtown. Three years later he married Nancy Hanks, described as "intelligent, deeply religious, kindly, and affectionate," but as "illiterate" as himself. Of her family and background little authentic is known.
