Abraham Lincoln: Nation
built 127 days ago
Lincoln has been memorialized in many city names, notably the capital of Nebraska; with the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC (illustrated, right); on the U.S. $5 bill and the 1 cent coin; and as part of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Lincoln's Tomb, Lincoln's Home in Springfield, New Salem, Illinois (a reconstruction of Lincoln's early adult hometown), Ford's Theater and Petersen House are all preserved as museums.

These debates set Lincoln solidly on the way to the presidency. It was the first time that national newspaper coverage of a "local contest" had a role in defining national difficulties. Lincoln comes across as a passive opponent of slavery, nothing of an abolitionist. Douglas unabashedly draws distinctions between the "superior" White race and all other "inferior" races, which GOT CHEERS from the crowd. This is the actual history not some sanitized version of events.

"Here at Ford's Theatre, the National Park Service and the Ford's Theatre Society have collaborated successfully to bring the story of Abraham Lincoln to life," said Secretary Kempthorne. "The expansion and renovation of the complex will enhance the visitor experience and allow more people to better understand the man and his times."

In his First Inaugural Address, Lincoln declared, "I hold that in contemplation of universal law and of the Constitution the Union of these States is perpetual. Perpetuity is implied, if not expressed, in the fundamental law of all national governments," arguing further that the purpose of the United States Constitution was "to form a more perfect union" than the Articles of Confederation which were explicitly perpetual... the Constitution too was perpetual. He asked rhetorically that even were the Constitution a simple contract, would it not require the agreement of all parties to rescind it?

It was the Declaration of Independence, rather than the Bible, that Lincoln most relied on in order to oppose any further territorial expansion of slavery. He saw the Declaration as more than a political document. To him, as well as to many abolitionists and other antislavery leaders, it was, foremost, a moral document that had forever determined valuable criteria in shaping the future of the nation.
