Abortion: Woman

The effect of abortion on mental health has been an area of political and scientific controversy. A number of studies have concluded that abortion has positive or neutral effects on women. However, other studies have suggested that pre-existing factors in a woman's life, such as emotional attachment to the pregnancy, lack of support, and conservative views on abortion, may increase the likelihood of experiencing negative feelings after an abortion. No studies have established a causal relationship between abortion and negative psychological symptoms.[75] At a 1989 hearing on the subject, a representative of the American Psychological Association testified that "severe negative reactions [after abortion] are rare and are in line with those following other normal life stresses."[76] Former Surgeon General of the United States C. Everett Koop, who is self-described as pro-life, conducted a review of the medical and psychological impact of abortion on women while he was in office. Koop summarized his findings in a letter to President Ronald Reagan by saying that the psychological effects were "miniscule" from a public health perspective.[77] Koop refused to publish his completed review, which was later found to have to have concluded that the procedure has not long-term mental health effects on women.[78]
"Pioneer" abortionist Kenneth Wright has been sued by the family of a woman who died from complications following an abortion, and by another woman who was hospitalized after an abortion. Wright is one of the nation's most "experienced" abortionists, with over 30 years' experience. He currently commits abortions in Central California, including Fresno and Bakersfield.
A facility is required to file a report with DOH for every abortion performed. This applies to an abortion that is performed as the result of a physician providing or prescribing a drug for a woman at the facility. As needed, DOH will update the form and instructions for completing the form and will send the updates to all hospitals and all freestanding facilities registered with DOH to perform abortions.

Some will be surprised that such protections can exist under the U.S. Supreme Court's abortion decisions. But the Court has never said that government may not protect prenatal life outside the abortion context. It has even allowed states to declare that human life begins at conception, and that it deserves legal protection from that point onward -- so long as this principle is not used to place an undue burden on a woman's "right" to choose abortion before viability.3 Although states may not place meaningful restrictions or prohibitions on abortion under current Supreme Court jurisprudence, harmful experiments on human embryos are illegal in ten states regardless of how they are funded.4 Public sentiment ... seems even more opposed to public funding of such experiments than to funding of abortion.5

The risk of spontaneous abortion decreases sharply after the 8th week.[5] This risk is greater in those with a known history of several spontaneous abortions or an induced abortion, those with systemic diseases, and those over age 35. Other causes can be infection (of either the woman or fetus), immune response, or serious systemic disease. A spontaneous abortion can ... be caused by accidental trauma; intentional trauma to cause miscarriage is considered induced abortion or feticide.
About 15% of pregnancies end in spontaneous abortion. In many cases, the woman is not even aware she is pregnant. The pregnancy is only a few days or weeks old and the woman believes the miscarriage is just her menses. About 25% percent of all women will have a spontaneous abortion during their lives.[1]
