Abortion: Procedures

Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a standard gynecological procedure performed for a variety of reasons, including examination of the uterine lining for possible malignancy, investigation of abnormal bleeding, and abortion. Curettage refers to cleaning the walls of the uterus with a curette. The World Health Organization recommends this procedure... called [S]harp curettage, only when MVA is unavailable.[8] The term D and C, or sometimes suction curette, is used as a euphemism for the first trimester abortion procedure, whichever the method used.
The most common abortion during this stage is a suction abortion. In later stages, as the fetus grows, the procedure becomes more complex. Cost ranges from $600 to over $5,000 per procedure, depending upon the stage of development at which it is performed and the type of anesthetic that is used.

Legal abortion is considered to be among the safest of all medical procedures. Less than one percent of women experience major complications from abortion. In fact, abortion is much safer than giving birth. But in an abortion, as in any surgery, there are a few risks such as:

The type of abortion procedure used in elective pregnancy termination is primarily determined by how far a woman is into pregnancy. During the first trimester, you will usually have the option of having a medical abortion procedure or a surgical abortion procedure . Before considering the various abortion procedures, it is recommended that you obtain a sonogram to determine if the pregnancy is viable (uterine, non-ectopic pregnancy) and for accurate pregnancy dating or gestation.
The Supreme Court has reversed a decision it handed down in 2000 and upheld a Congressional ban on the gruesome partial-birth abortion procedure. The ruling indicated that the federal ban on the abortion procedure did not violate the so-called right to abortion established under Roe v. Wade.
Unsafe abortion remains a public health concern today due to the higher incidence and severity of its associated complications, such as incomplete abortion, sepsis, hemorrhage, and damage to internal organs. WHO estimates that 19 million unsafe abortions occur around the world annually and that 68,000 of these result in the woman's death.[49] Complications of unsafe abortion are said to account, globally, for approximately 13% of all maternal mortalities, with regional estimates including 12% in Asia, 25% in Latin America, and 13% in sub-Saharan Africa.[50] A 2007 study published in the The Lancet found that, although the global rate of abortion declined from 45.6 million in 1995 to 41.6 million in 2003, unsafe procedures still accounted for 48% of all abortions performed in 2003.[51] Health education, access to family planning, and improvements in health care during and after abortion have been proposed to address this phenomenon.[52]
