This physical effect may cause you to feel an emotional emptiness you have never felt before. This emptiness is the beginning of depression that studies say can last a lifetime.

The nation's Catholic bishops have repudiated a document written by a professor at Marquette University, a Catholic school, saying that abortion and contraception are morally permissible. The call the pro-abortion views int he pamphlet "false teaching" and point to the church's long-standing pro-life views. Daniel Maguire, a professor of religious ethics at Marquette, authored the document and mailed it last summer to the nation's 270 Catholic bishops.

Kevin Drum writes, "Ponnuru is right: if abortion is murder, then anyone who gets an abortion should be jailed. Anybody who performs an abortion should be put on death row. Anybody who supports abortion rights is little better than a mobster or a terrorist. But if that's what [pro-lifers] believe — and they do — why does he think it's unwise to admit it in public? The question answers itself, doesn't it?"

Several texts have been influential in recent discussions about abortion. Both Jewish and Christian traditions have regarded the divine command "Be fruitful and multiply" (Genesis 1:28) as demanding a high rate of procreation incompatible with abortion in a non-life-threatening situation. Like Leviticus 27, later rabbinical teachings differentiated between life under and over the age of one month, while relying on biblical injunctions to respect and choose life in determining that abortions could be performed to preserve the life of the mother. Christians opposed to abortion have referred to Luke 1:41-44 as evidence that a child is cognizant in the uterus, but this in no way validates the supposition that God opposes abortion.

A group of Catholic Democrats in the US Congress recently objected to comments of Pope Benedict XVI about the fact that legislators favoring the legality of abortion should not receive Communion. They said, "Advancing respect for life and for the dignity of every human being is, as our church has taught us, our own life's mission."
