Nearly two dozen anti-abortion demonstrators were arrested outside the U.S. Supreme Court last week as they made their views known ahead of the hearing at which Nebraska's partial-birth abortion ban was under scrutiny. They were violating an order issued by the court's marshal just hours earlier which prohibited the exhibition of large signs by the demonstrators. Looking at the issue of abortion, relying solely on reason which is a requirement of being a Deist, it becomes obvious that abortion for convenience sake is wrong. The key argument for proponents of this act is that a woman has a right to her own body. This is a true and correct statement. All people have a right to do to their own bodies what they will. However, the fetus, or unborn baby, is a distinct individual. Even though it resides inside its mother, it is a separate entity genetically.

The current U.S. administration, well known for its support of all types of abortion, recently issued guidelines that would permit federally financed scientists to conduct research on human embryo cells. Scientists are supposedly justified in working on embryos to obtain stem cells, "because retrieval is conducted when the embryo is still a one-week-old microscopic ball of undifferentiated cells, long before any organs or limbs have developed." As if that means the embryo is not a human being. Representative Henry Hyde is credited with the astute observation that, "the human embryo will not develop into a German shepherd."

After getting national attention last week with comments supporting taxpayer funding abortions and calling the funding a "right," Rudy Giuliani thumbed his nose at the pro-life movement further over the weekend telling them to get over the issue of abortion. Giuliani, the former New York City mayor, has seen his polling numbers decline slightly because of his wide difference with most Republicans on the issue of abortion. He's previously indicated that he will let Republican judge him on his track record and stances and determine on their own whether he's qualified to get the GOP nod for president in 2008.
