The Aaliyah Memorial Fund was created to support causes Aaliyah, a talented and popular young artist who died tragically in 2001, found important. These include, but are not limited to, Breast Cancer research, AIDS awareness and relief and Alzheimer's research.

Aaliyah was discovered by hip-hop producer R. Kelly, who worked on Age Ain't Nothin' But A Number. Aaliyah was one of nine people who died when their twin-engine Cessna crashed on takeoff from Marsh Harbour on Abaco Island in the Bahamas; the group was returning to the U.S. after filming a music video. An investigation revealed the plane was overloaded by several hundred pounds, and an autopsy showed traces of cocaine and alcohol in the pilot's bloodstream. Aaliyah's parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit and settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.

Aaliyah's alliance with Kelly was not present on her 2nd LP released - One In A Million. The LP gave Aaliyah another Top 10 pop hit with "If Your Girl Only Knew" as well as the hits "One In A Million" and "4 Page Letter." Another track on the LP was a remake of Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up." Aaliyah extended her reputation for sultry, street-wise sounds and videos.

On Saturday August 25th, 2001, Aaliyah and other eight people died when their plane crashed in the Bahamas. It's still unclear whether the plane being overloaded and/or the pilot being unqualified to fly the Cessna caused the accident, but it couldn't have helped.
