In 1994, when Aaliyah was on 14, she released her debut album Age Ain't Nothing But A Number. Spawning the hit singles Back & Forth, a No. 1 R&B song & Top 5 hit on Billboard's Hot 100 and At Your Best (You Are Loved) , the album was an instant success. Her follow-up album, One In A Million, went multi-platinum thanks to the signature syncopated beats of a then-unknown producer named Timbaland.

Aaliyah took her time recording a follow-up, and put the process completely on hold to start an acting career. She co-starred with martial-arts master Jet Li and rapper DMX in 2000's urban Shakespeare adaptation Romeo Must Die, and her accompanying soundtrack single, "Try Again," became her first number one hit on the pop charts that summer. Aaliyah subsequently completed filming on the Anne Rice vampire flick Queen of the Damned, playing the title role as a vampire queen, and was cast in a prominent role in the two sequels to The Matrix. Plus, she finally finished her long-awaited third album, with Timbaland again handling the most prominent tracks. Released in the summer of 2001, Aaliyah completed the singer's image overhaul into a sensual yet sensitive adult. The record received excellent reviews, and the first single, "We Need a Resolution," was a Top 20 R&B hit.

Three quite years passed, with many wondering when the next Aaliyah project would drop. Teasing the audience with numerous guest appearances and songs off soundtracks, the world was more than ready for the return of the highest most exalted one.In 1997, Aaliyah finally emerged through and came out strong with the impressive and critically acclaimed album, One In a Million. This album, which was a result of countless studio hours and numerous producers such as Timbaland, Missy Elliot, Kay-Gee and Jermaine Dupri, showed Aaliyah's growth and maturity, this time around. One In a Million, went double platinum silencing all her critics as well as questions as to whether or not she was just a one hit wonder. The first single off the album, If Your Girl Only Knew, went straight to #1 on the Billboard Top R&B charts as well as hitting Top Ten on the Billboard 100 Chart.

Aaliyah was released three months later on July 17, 2001 to excellent reviews. The All Music guide gave the album high praise. "Urban albums rarely come any better than this, and there haven't been many records better than this in 2001, period."[19] Aaliyah introduced a darker and edgier side to her music and was noted as showcasing her growth both as an artist and as a person.[20] She recorded much of the album while working on her second film, The Queen of the Damned. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart,. In the week following her death, the album sold 305,000 units[21] and went double platinum in the US by October.[22]

Also in 2001, she played the title role in Queen of the Damned, based on the bestselling novel by Anne Rice and set for release in 2002. She scored a major casting coup when she signed to appear in two upcoming sequels to the blockbuster sci-fi thriller The Matrix, starring Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne.
