1. Native American Tribes
   During the 1950s, trying to assimilate Native Americans into mainstream America, the U.S. government ended federal trusteeship of roughly three percent of the country's Native American population through a process called termination. Of the 109 tribes and bands terminated, 62 were native to Oregon. Even though the tone of the termination legislation was emancipation, the net effect of the policy on terminated tribes was cultural, political and economic devastation.
2. Hip -- Hip Hop Honors
   VH1 will once again honor the hip hop pioneers and legends that have made significant contributions to music and pop culture with the fourth annual "VH1 Hip Hop Honors." Hosted by Tracy Morgan, this year's honorees include A Tribe Called Quest, Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliott, WHODINI, the film Wild Style, and Teddy Riley and Andre Harrell for New Jack Swing.
3. Jurassic 5 -- Album
   Jurassic 5's 2000 debut Quality Control didn't do too bad at all. They managed to get into the right end of the top 40 album chart and although not getting to gold status they did manage to get enough positive write-ups to make the release one of the most popular hip hop albums that year.
4. Underground Hip Hop -- Years
   In an industry dominated by negative messages and materialistic attitudes, Treologic emerges as a beacon to hip hop and one of the most exciting live acts to come out of Chicago in several years. Treologic was recently the recipient of the $35,000 Grand Prize in DiscMaker's 2005 Midwest Independent Music World Series. 5. Beastie Boys -- Groups
   Beastie Boys were the first successful white rap group, and one of the few acts from the early days of hip-hop that still enjoy major success. Their rock and punk-influenced rap has had significant impact on artists both in and outside the hip-hop scene.
6. Busta Rhymes -- Albums
   Busta Rhymes is one of hip-hop's most essential live acts. After a guest spot on A Tribe Called Quest's seminal hit "Scenario," Busta Rhymes began to gain platinum-style popularity with a string of well-crafted, clever and danceable hip-hop albums. His seventh studio effort, The Big Bang, features superstar guest spots from the late Rick James, Stevie Wonder and Missy Elliott. It's sure to be the jam of the summer.
7. Brown University -- Spring Weekend
   Starting in 1950, Brown replaced the traditional Junior Week and Junior Prom, which were discontinued during World War II, with Spring Weekend, which featured athletic contests and dances. Concerts featuring invited performers began in 1960.[17] In the past, it has brought in acts such as Ray Charles (1962, 1970), The Isley Brothers (1963), Bob Dylan (1964, 1997), The Coasters (1964), Ella Fitzgerald (1965), Bo Diddley (1965, 1997), The Shirelles (1965), The (Young) Rascals (1967), The Yardbirds (1968), Dizzy Gillespie (1968), James Brown (1968), Smokey Robinson (1969), Janis Joplin (1969), Bonnie Raitt (1972, 1978), Ike and Tina Turner (1972), Blue Öyster Cult (1972), Phil Ochs (1974), Bruce Springsteen (1974), Charles Mingus (1977), U2 (1984), R.E.M. (1985), Afrika Bambaata (1985), Elvis Costello (1987), A Tribe Called Quest (1992), De La Soul (1992), Violent Femmes (1994, 2001), Buddy Guy (1994), George Clinton (1996), Coolio (1996), The Fugees (1996), Rakim (1998), Sonic Youth (1998), Yo La Tengo (1998), Busta Rhymes (1999), and Wyclef Jean (2000). Recent acts include They Might Be Giants (2001), Ben Harper (2001), Jurassic 5 (2001, 2004), The Get Up Kids (2002), The Roots (2002), Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (2003), The Wallflowers (2003), Béla Fleck and the Flecktones (2004), Ben Folds (2005), Howie Day (2005), The Shins (2005), and Talib Kweli (2005).[18] The Spring Weekend 2006 lineup included headliners Wilco and Common, as well as openers Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, OK Go, Yerba Buena, and Edan.[19]
8. Mos Def -- Talib Kweli
   Mos Def is a living embodiment of the progress hip-hop has made since the late '70s. Today the genre's artists are no longer just masters of ceremony, but multi-faceted entertainers. In what now appears to be a one-time group effort, 1998 saw Mos Def and Talib Kweli bombard the hip-hop scene as Black Star with socially conscious lyrics about self-knowledge. Coupled with production by DJ Hi-Tek, the self-titled group album quickly placed both Def and Kweli in the spotlight as saviors from rap's materialistic clichés.
9. Busta Rhymes
   Maybe Busta Rhymes is rap's first great dramatic actor. Born Trevor Smith in Brooklyn, N.Y., he's already created hip-hop's most enduring character--himself. His Jamaican parents moved the family to New York's Long Island in order for Busta and his brother to enjoy a better life. But Rhymes took his love of hip-hop with him to the suburbs. By the age of 18, he was signed to Elektra Records as part of the teen rap ensemble Leaders of the New School, but the group never achieved mainstream success. In 1991 he did a small guest spot on A Tribe Called Quest's song ""Scenario.'' It became the most famous 60-second solo in rap history; after hearing it, director John Singleton cast Rhymes in his 1995 film ""Higher Learning.'' ""It was a little bitty part,'' Singleton says.
