A Midsummer Night's Dream: Hermia
built 440 days ago
A Midsummer Night's Dream begins with two sets of lovers, Lysander and Hermia and Helena and Demetrius. Unfortunately for Helena, Demetrius no longer loves Helena, instead falling for Hermia. Hermia's father Egeus ... wants Hermia to marry Demetrius. Unable to change his daughter's mind, Egeus calls upon The Duke of Athens, Theseus to ensure Hermia marries Demetrius. Theseus himself will marry Hippolyta, the Queen of the Amazons in four days time. This results in Hermia being given a choice under the Athenian law; marry Demetrius, become a nun or face death.
Disney shorts: A Midsummer Night's Dream was adaptated into a Disney short starring Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and Daisy Duck as Lysander, Hermia, Demetrius, and Helena, respectively. In the end, the story is revealed to be a dream that Mickey has during a picnic. This short was featured in Disney's "Mickey Mouse Works" and "House of Mouse"
A central plot element of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a reversal involving Helena. Whereas in Act 1 she was miffed because both Lysander and Demetrius loved Hermia and nobody loved her, in Act 3, thanks to Puck’s love juice, suddenly both men are wild for Helena. Helena’s reaction is anger and suspicion. She thinks it is all a trick, that the two men are faking their adoration and that Hermia is going along with it.
For many, Shakespeare’s plays were an introduction to the theater; some were no doubt introduced to the magic of the stage through his fantastical comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream. In this play, the worlds of the mythological Greece, Elizabethan England, and the fairy kingdom are united. In another writer’s hands, the transition from Theseus’ Greek empire to the fairy forest would seem jarring, but time and again audiences have willing suspended their disbelief to follow Hermia and Lysander, Oberon and Puck, Titania and Bottom on a journey through the pitfalls of love, the power of magic, and the miracle of dreams.
You have just seen Michael Hoffman’s production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Recall as much as you can of this section of the movie. What were the male lovers doing to show their devotion to Helena? How did Helena treat them? How did she treat Hermia? How did Hermia react?
In the following essay, Green explores the homoerotic aspects of A Midsummer Night's Dream by examining Bottom's explication of his “dream,” Oberon's attraction to the changeling boy, and the relationship between Helena and Hermia. The critic contends... that the play ultimately upholds conservative cultural ideologies.
