VUMC and Junior League of Nashville officials recently gathered at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital to celebrate 25 years of the Junior League Home at Vanderbilt and cut the ribbon on the home's newly renovated space. The A-League won't have a player - at least by reputation - in the world's top thousand. On this score, the unimaginative recruiting (there is only one South American and no Africans) has not been helpful. But local fans are educated enough to accept that while the big names will be missing, the matches themselves may still be entertaining. That is where the coaches, and their tactics, are crucial.

An England vs. France international in November 1953 saw the total attendances for the league programme drop by 50%, while the coverage of the 1954 World Cup Final between Great Britain and France saw them down by over a third.
