A League of Their Own: Walter Harvey
built 182 days ago
Penny Marshall’s A League of Their Own (1992) is a marvelous tribute to America’s temporary fascination with starting a professional ‘all-girl’ baseball league. Forced by WWII to consider shutting down professional baseball, league owner Walter Harvey (Garry Marshall) decides to invest in the first professional woman’s league instead. He sends his talent scout, the cantankerous Ernie Capadino (Jon Lovitz) on a cross country tour to find the best of the best.

With all the men off fighting World War II, professional men's baseball doesn't have enough men to sustain the league. In comes chocolate-bar mogul Walter Harvey (Garry Marshall, director of Runaway Bride, Pretty Woman, and Beaches) with a radical idea. In the midst of Rosie the Riveter, Harvey suggests the creation of a professional women's baseball league while the boys are away. Find some talented women who are easy on the eyes, put them in cute, skirted uniforms, and let's see if people will show up while the men are defending the country.

During the tryout/league formation sequence at Harvey (Wrigley) Field, every shot takes place at the famous stadium, except one. When Betty Spaghetti backpedals to catch a fly ball, the background shows a rickety wooden outfield fence, not Wrigley's famous ivy-covered walls.
