"A League of Their Own" is based on the true story of the All-American Girls Baseball League, begun in 1943 to sub for the men at war. Though the teams continued playing ball until 1954, the girls mostly marched back into the kitchen when their Johnnies came marching home. It wasn't until 1988 that they were honored by the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Mount Vernon native Phil Gallogly decided that the 16-18 year-old age group needed a chance to play summer ball — not everyone can travel with an American Legion team. His solution, start up a Knox County 16-18 year-old league.

The "Ladies Professional Baseball League" that was formed in 1997 under the title of "Ladies League Baseball" expanded eastward from the U.S. West Coast in 1998 to include teams in Buffalo NY. and Augusta NJ. The league played 16 games of a 56 game schedule before disbanding due to rising insurance costs, low attendance, and expensive stadium rent fees.

What started out as informal weekend outings to the park has mushroomed into a full-fledged league of about 170 players on 13 teams all vying for their team names to get permanently etched onto the BAFL trophy.
