A League of Their Own: Games
built 189 days ago
Hang on Aaron, you seem to forget that you re comparing a league that in it’s 3rd year, to a competition that has clubs in it that were formed only a few years after Australia became a country!!! “Soccer”, as you call it, is already bigger then Rugby League. How many people in Perth, Adelaide or Melbourne watch League? It is not as big as AFL, but AFL has 100 years behind it. So far, there has been 18 goals scored in 8 games, with a crowd of 31,545 watching Melbourne draw with Perth. This is when the other codes are still playing as well. An average overall attendance of more then 15,500 in the first two rounds is actually higher then the English Chapmionship.
The A-League's longevity, and its credibility, will be determined by its crowds. And those crowds will be determined by the quality of the games. This is where the new competition jumps into the great unknown.

In an effort to populate the league with players, tryout camps will be held in Chicago in mid-July and in the Washington, D.C. and Dallas areas later in the summer. The league plans to hold exhibitions in November in an effort to introduce fans to the game. One other plan to attract fans to the league will be to use the capabilities of the World Wide web to their advantage.

The program was the only media outlet to support the South Sydney cause from the start, Corra claims, and will continue to fight to get the game back to the way it was before Super League. "That involves bringing back as many of the traditional clubs as possible," McCarthy says. "If that doesn't happen, the future of the game looks very shaky."

The Knox County 16-18-year old league is well on its way to becoming sanctioned by Babe Ruth. As it would only take one more team to become official, spreading the word becomes vital. 15-year-old players are already watching the games, and have expressed interest in playing next year.
As such, the league is about much more than the game. Drawing at least 200 immigrants from Mexico each week to this industrial strip near downtown, it has become an unofficial cornerstone for Seattle's fast-growing Mexican community, a de facto Elks Club, social services agency and Chamber of Commerce, with members in Air Jordans.
