Something is not so ordinary about Tom in "A History of Violence," and you wonder immediately if he’s had a similar encounter before. He didn’t foil the bad men in a way that a first-time victim would handle it. He’s calculated, exact and quick about it. Nevertheless, he’s a hero.

While A History of Violence is not as interesting as a man turning into a grotesque insect, it's not that bad. In fact some bits are really very good. Man is violent, man gives up violence, man starts new life, man lives for 20 years and raises a family, man is reaquainted with old life, man is violent again.

A History of Violence is by no means a standout film, but it is still a movie worth your consideration. While it is not a great action film or a great drama, the production is solid enough to warrant a rental from your local video store.

A History of Violence appears in an aspect ratio of approximately 1.85:1 on this single-sided, double-layered DVD; the image has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions. Not too many issues cropped up in this generally fine transfer.
