Christmas was the one day of the year when the children did not work and received a gift. A gift for each child - something to call their own. This special gift was an orange. John had been in the orphanage long enough to look forward with delight and anticipation of this special day of Christmas and to the orange he would receive. In Old England, and to John and his orphan companions, an orange was a rare and special gift. It had an unusual aroma of something they smelled only at Christmas.

C & Y Chinese Restaurant, in Cleveland's Asiatown neighborhood, is the official restaurant of "A Christmas Story" House and diners receive a 20 percent discount on their meal by showing their Christmas Story House ticket stub. The is a large and lively eatery, reminiscent of the large Chinese restaurants around the California Bay area. The menu is varied, the clientele a harmonious mix of Asians and others, and the atmosphere upbeat and fun.
For the 2006 Christmas season, Cingular Wireless commissioned a television commercial that featured a condensed version of the film's story where the lead character has a similar obsession with getting a particular type of Motorola cell phone. The repeated admonition is "You'll run the bill up!" (the commercial is for a prepaid service).
A Christmas Story is currently gracing stages nationwide. There are 95 shows in the States (nine shows in Texas alone!) and two productions in Canada one set for Theatre Windsor in Dec 2008 and one now onstage at Theatre and Company.
If one had to spend Christmas away from one’s family, what more appropriate reason could one have than to care for a man without a home? Jesus Christ, after all, entered this world on the first Christmas as the most famous homeless man in history, there being “no room at the inn” for Mary and Joseph.
