A Beautiful Mind

This biography was the basis for the popular film A Beautiful Mind a few years ago. It's the fascinating story of an arrogant young mathematician who began his career with genius-level work in mathetmatics, succumbed to paranoid schizophrenia in his thirties, and ultimately experienced a remission in the late 80s and was awarded the Nobel Prize for his early work in game theory.

That which sets A Beautiful Mind a part from Horner's earlier efforts is simply Charlotte Church's vocal performance. Throughout the film and soundtrack, Church's voice is primarily used as a instrumentá la Sissel from Horner's score to Titanic or Annie Lennox from Apollo 13. This is marginally disappointing, given the teenage-vocalists' remarkable talent, but, then again, her voice could easily become a clear distraction. Be this as it may, this underutilization is somewhat compensated for in All Love Can Be (15), which introduces the end credits within the film. The brief vocal performance of the A Beautiful Mind's main theme, is another collaborative effort of James Horner and lyrist Will Jennings. Even though Church only uses a minute portion of her talent for the song, it is the highlight of the soundtrack. The tracks' brevity is suggests that the song wasn't produced to fuel soundtrack sales as much as to add an emotional and memorable shot to the film.

A Beautiful Mind appears in an aspect ratio of approximately 1.85:1 on this single-sided, double-layered DVD; the image has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions. As befit a recent movie of such high stature, the picture looked very good from start to finish, though it didn’t quite seem terrific.

"It was a beautiful idea," said Marco Archetti, a former student of Dr. Hamilton who is now at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. Dr. Hamilton had Mr. Archetti turn the hypothesis into a mathematical model. The model showed that warning signals could indeed drive the evolution of bright leaves - at least in theory. Another student, Sam Brown, tested the leaf-signal hypothesis against real data about trees and insects. "It was a first stab to see what was out there," said Dr. Brown, now an evolutionary biologist the University of Texas. He studied 262 tree species, noting the leaf color and number of aphid species specialized on them.

Austin Pendleton, who has appeared in films such as "A Beautiful Mind" and "Amistad," takes on the role of the mentor in "LovelyBySurprise.com." Veteran actress Kate Burton ("Grey's Anatomy" and "The Ice Storm") lends her experience as his wife and Carrie Preston ("Transamerica," "Sex and the City") leads the cast as the gifted but stalled author. In "TheNeverything.com," the two quirky brothers are played by Dallas Roberts ("Walk the Line") and up-and- comer Michael Chernus.

Adam Goldberg (SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, A BEAUTIFUL MIND) stars in this riotous low-budget laugh-fest that is as hysterically politically incorrect as possible. Goldberg is Mordechai Jefferson Carver, a "circumcised dick" who is hired by the Jewish Justice League, headed by Bloomenbergensteinthal (Peter Coyote), to save Chanukah, which Damian Claus (Andy Dick), Santas evil spawn, wants to destroy forever. The Semitic Stud gets help from Mohammad Ali Paula Abdul Rahim (Mario Van Peebles), head of the Kwanzaa Liberation Front, and Bloomenbergensteinthals sexy daughter, Esther (Judy Greer), who is a "nice piece of tuchus." This is one funny self-described Jewxploitation flick that will bring knowing chuckles and guffaws to anyone who has ever attended Hebrew school or has an overbearing mother.
