1. Jane Wyman
   Jane Wyman was born Sarah Jane Mayfield on January 5, 1917, in St. Joseph, Missouri (she was ... known later as Sarah Jane Fulks). When she was only eight years old, and after her parents filed for divorce, she lost her father prematurely. After graduating high school she attempted, with the help of her mother, to break into films, but to no avail. In 1932, after attending the University of Missouri, she began a career as a radio singer, which led to her first name change to Jane Durrell. In 1936 she signed a contract with Warner Bros. Pictures and that led to another name change, the more familiar one of Jane Wyman.
2. Jane Wyman -- Jane Wyman Theater
   Jane Wyman is one of the few Hollywood movie stars to have had an equally successful television career. She was at the height of her film career in the mid-1950s when she launched her first television series, Jane Wyman Theater. Modeled after the successful The Loretta Young Show, the prime-time filmed anthology series presented a different drama each week, with Wyman as host, producer, and sometimes actress. Between 1958 and 1980, Wyman appeared occasionally as a guest star on television series and in made-for-TV movies. Then, in 1981, she scored another series success with her portrayal of ruthless matriarch Angela Channing on CBS's prime-time soap opera, Falcon Crest.
3. Jane Wyman -- Jane Wyman Humanitarian Award
   "Jane was probably one of the most important philanthropists for the arthritis cause," said Stanford Rubin, former national chairman of the Arthritis Foundation. "In 1977 she became the second recipient of the Charles B. Harding award — the highest national award given by the Arthritis Foundation. In turn, the local Southern California chapter created the Jane Wyman Humanitarian Award. Afflicted with arthritis and diabetes herself, Jane was the lead person running the local annual arthritis telethons for about 20 years, many times appearing with her daughter, Maureen Reagan. Jane acted as the Foundation's national chairperson for many years, flew around the country promoting the cause and was a substantial benefit from an awareness standpoint."

6. Jane Wyman -- Roles
   Wyman adopted her professional name when she signed a contract with Warner Bros. in 1936 for $65 per week. By then, she had appeared in more than a dozen films without credit or identified as Sara Jane Fulks. Often cast as a fast-talking sidekick, Wyman's name appeared on screen for the first time for her role as a hatcheck girl in the 1937 ``Smart Blonde,'' the first in a series of girl reporter films.
7. Jane Wyman -- Warner Bros
   Wyman escaped B-pictures by persuading Jack Warner to loan her to Paramount for "The Lost Weekend." The film won the Academy Award for 1945 and led to another loanout -- to MGM for "The Yearling." De-glamourized as a backwoods wife and mother, the actress received her first Oscar nomination.
8. Jane Wyman -- Johnny Belinda
   In the late 1940s and early 1950s Jane Wyman was such a potent box office draw that audiences queued around the block for melodramatic "Wyman weepies" such as Magnificent Obsession, All That Heaven Allows and Miracle in the Rain. She was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar three times, and won the award in 1949 for her role as a deaf mute who is raped and made pregnant by a bully in Johnny Belinda.
9. Jane Wyman -- Falcon Crest
   As the ex-wife of the newly-elected President Ronald Reagan, Wyman was being sought out by the media. Her publicity value did not escape Lorimar Productions's Earl Hamner and CBS. Seeking to capitalize on their success with Dallas and Knots Landing, Lorimar and CBS launched Falcon Crest in 1981 with Jane Wyman starring as a female version of Dallas's ruthless and manipulative J.R. Ewing. For nine seasons, she portrayed Angela Channing, the powerful matriarch of a wealthy, wine-making family. Wyman had made a successful return to series television, but in a role quite different from earlier work.
10. Jane Wyman -- Lost Weekend
    Later, Wyman earned an Academy Award nod and a Golden Globe win for The Blue Veil (1951); a special Golden Globe trophy as "World Film Favorite" in 1951; and an Oscar nomination for Magnificent Obsession (1954). Her other noteworthy films include The Lost Weekend (1945) and Pollyanna (1960).
