At its heart, "9 Songs" is about a man in sorrowful remembrance of a relationship cut short. Matt (Kieran O'Brien), a glaciologist studying Antarctica, narrates the story of his brief love affair with an American girl named Lisa (Margo Stilley). Matt and Lisa meet at a rock concert and waste no time in getting intimate. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

The bands showcased include Franz Ferdinand, Goldfrapp and The Dandy Warhols. Shot in a gritty, handheld style, the songs rarely complement what’s going on in the romance.

Kieran O'Brien and Margo Stilley in 9 Songs In Full: It'd take a through-and-through prude to completely abandon 9 Songs based on its method of telling the tale of Matt's relationship with his summer-love, Lisa. To make the effort to leave the house and go to the cinema only to tut for all of this film's 69 minutes would be about as pointless as standing around a water cooler after every episode of Extreme Makeover, or Big Brother, or whatever pathetic reality TV show happens to be hot that week, and complain about television's eternal attempt to dumb-down for its audience.

For all the expected hubbub 9 Songs will generate, it isn't much to get excited about. After the first few song-sex couplets the pattern becomes a drearier countdown to its inevitable conclusion, spiced up by sadism and cocaine.

Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar Brothers In Arms features 9 songs written by Knopfler, including one that was co-written by Sting who provides guest vocals on the album as well. It was originally released in 1985 and next month's special edition marks the albums 20th Anniversary. The SACD of Brothers In Arms follows last year's release of Knopfler's most recent album entitled Shangri-La in Surround Sound SACD in the European market by Mercury Records and later in the U.S. on a DVD-A + CD Double Disc by Warner Music U.S.
Whether 9 Songs is erotic art or pornography masquerading as erotic art doesn't really matter. The fact that it even poses the question is interesting in its own right and with unsimulated sex un-cut by the censors it's the most sexually explicit film to get a general release in British cinema.
