9 11: New York
built 192 days ago
According to the New York Post today, 9/11 families and firefighters who are holding a press conference at Dartmouth College this afternoon are outraged with Rudy Giuliani's leadership in the aftermath of 9/11. FDNY Deputy Fire Chief Jim Riches said, "He's misleading voters and distorting the truth. He didn't prepare the first responders for a terrorist attack. The Office of Emergency Management was a joke that day. There was a lack of communication. People died unnecessarily." [New York Post, 11/19/07]

New York, April 22/ 2004/PRNewswire/ -- By remarkable coincidence, 9/11 first figured prominently in the nation's history when Henry Hudson of the Dutch East India Company sailed through the narrows into New York Harbor in 1609. He named Manhattan after the Indian tribe that dwelled on the island. Fort Amsterdam was built there sixteen years later.
One of the most visible elements of new security effort post 9/11 was the requirement that reinforced doors be installed. By 2002, the FAA reported that all major U.S. airlines had complied. CR searched NASA's Aviation Safety Reporting System and found 51 incidents since April 2002 in which flight crews reported problems with the hardened doors, many instances in which the door unexpectedly opened up in flight.
Noam Chomsky's international anti-war bestseller, 9-11 has become the subject of debate in mainstream media. Following controversial feature articles in the New York Times and Washington Post , arch-conservative William Bennett proposed on Paula Zahn's CNN morning show that he and Chomsky debate live. The "debate" took place on Thursday, May 30, 2002. Meanwhile, the Guardian (U.K.) published an article on American coverage generally and CNN's commentary specifically, comparing it to Soviet-style "conformity which muzzles public discourse."
Wall Street's unemotional, rational response to terrorism five years after the 9/11 attacks is now a trademark of battle-tested investors. That cold, calculating financial reality was driven home Thursday when the U.S. stock market rallied despite news that British authorities thwarted a plot to blow up airplanes.
