60 Minutes: Ed Bradley
built 647 days ago
On November 17, 2002, 60 Minutes broadcast an investigative report on UnumProvident. After interviewing Ray Bourhis, Susan McGregor, Joan Hangarter, Dr. Gluck, Judge Chiantelli, Frank Winkles and others, Ed Bradley contacted a dozen or more UnumProvident claims officials.
During the 1995 crisis that became the subject of the movie "The Insider," when "60 Minutes" caved to corporate pressure and delayed a tough report about tobacco companies, "half the office wasn't talking to the other half," correspondent Lesley Stahl recalled. Bradley brought everyone to his apartment and said he wouldn't let them leave until they thrashed it out, she said.

The documents came from the "personal office file" of Bush's former squadron commander Jerry B. Killian, according to Kelli Edwards, a spokeswoman for "60 Minutes," who was quoted in Thursday's Washington Post. Edwards declined to tell the Post how the news program obtained the documents.

After the Killian documents controversy, the show was renamed 60 Minutes Wednesday to differentiate it from the original 60 Minutes Sunday edition. The show reverted to its original title on July 8, 2005, when the show moved to the 8 p.m. Friday timeslot, where it completed its run.

"The thing you reach for at `60 Minutes' is to develop your own voice, to be as much an individual in the true sense of yourself on camera," Stahl said. "Ed was able to show a lot of parts of himself on camera and not block it off."
