Originally a religious holiday to honor St. Patrick, who introduced Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century, St. Patrick’s Day has evolved into a celebration of all things Irish – anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. It is celebrated on March 17, a religious feast day to celebrate the anniversary of his death in the 5th century. It is a happy holiday for the Irish wherever they may be - in Dublin, New York City, Boston or San Francisco. The first St. Patrick’s day parade took place in the U.S. on March 17, 1762. Along with their music, the parade helped soldiers to reconnect with their Irish roots. On St. Patrick's Day, Irish families traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon with a traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.

Early in the 5th Century, Athens, Sparta, and other of the Greek city-states joined together to defeat powerful Persian invaders, a conflict from which Athens emerged as the central political force of the Greek confederacy. In subsequent years, Athens grew more powerful, asserting its dominance over its former allies. The Athenians sustained this position of prominence throughout the century, until overthrown finally in 404 by the Spartans to conclude the long Peloponnesian War that had developed between the powerful city-states.

The 5th century, from 401 to 500, brought enormous changes to Rome, and to the rest of Western Europe. The city was sacked by Goths in 410 and Vandals in 455. In 476, Romulus Augustulus, the last western emperor, was deposed by Odoacer. The Senate continued to control the city; the Pope was usually elected among members of the senatorial families.

Damon was a 5th century BCE. Pythagorean philosopher of Syracuse. Damon was a close friend to Phintias the Pythagorean. Dionysius, the tyrant, having condemned Phintias to death for conspiring against him, Phintias begged that leave might be allowed him to go for a short period to a neighboring place, in order to arrange some family affairs, and offered to leave one of his friends in the hands of Dionysius as a pledge for his return by an appointed time, and who would be willing, in case Phintias broke his word, to die in his stead. Dionysius, skeptical as to the existence of such friendship, and prompted by curiosity, assented to the arrangement, and Damon took the place of Phintias. The day appointed for the return of Phintias arrived, and the public expectation was highly excited as to the probable issue of this singular affair.
