The Integrated Packaging Tool, part of 3M's integrated packaging management solution, is the first web-based, centralized, structured application that enables integration and management of packaging information. In the consumer packaged goods industry, time to market and cost reduction are critical. 3M's software system enables unique capabilities to increase incremental revenue by speeding time to market, while simultaneously facilitating strategic sourcing of packaging materials. Using the Integrated Packaging Tool from 3M, managers gain better visibility to what is being purchased, when and by whom. Because the system is built with a structured back-end database, enforcement of business rules is automated. Government regulations, customer requirements, product surety or brand integrity initiatives can be effectively addressed and the potential for human error virtually eliminated.

Traditionally, 3M had been a place where researchers had been given wide latitude to pursue research down whatever alleys they wished. After the arrival of the new boss, the DMAIC process was laid over a phase-review process for innovations—a novelty at 3M. The goal was to speed up and systematize the progress of inventions into the new-product pipeline. The DMAIC questions "are all wonderful considerations, but are they appropriate for somebody who's just trying to...develop some ideas?" asks Boyd. The impact of the Six Sigma regime, according to Boyd and other former 3Mers, was that more predictable, incremental work took precedence over blue-sky research.

At 3M's Maplewood, Minn., headquarters, a road sign for the information superhighway points directly to Jim Radford's office. As manager of interactive customer communications and 3M's webmaster, Radford--who has a certificate commemorating the company's "First Internet Order" prominently framed above his gargantuan monitor--fires up his Web browser and logs into The Innovation Network, www.mmm.com. First he surfs through the flamboyantly graphical "3M Buf-Puf Products: The Teen Web zine for Health and Beauty" (sample articles: "Meet the Guys Who Eat Buf-Puf Sponges" and "Quiz: RU a Grrl, Geek or Groupie?"). Then, returning to the home page, he clicks into a buttoned-down set of pages describing 3M's new MP8030 Multimedia Projector. Beyond giving Radford a quick way to show off 3M's wildly diverse product lines, the company's Web site represents just one way 3M is delving into electronic commerce (EC) to serve its equally diverse customer base.

3M Museum Sign Freshening the museum, some of John Dwan’s original furniture now replicates the law office where 3M was incorporated in 1902. 3M helped the museum to assemble period documents, exhibits of an array of innovative products, interactive displays and historic artifacts as a step in celebrating a program that the company calls “A Century of Innovation.”
