Neither .38 Special nor its follow-up, Special Delivery, received much attention, but .38 Special began to build up a following through its constant touring. Bassist Lyons left before the recording of 1979's Rockin' Into the Night, the album that demonstrated a more melodic, driving sound; he was replaced by Larry Junstrom. Rockin' Into the Night became a moderate hit, but 1981's Wild-Eyed Southern Boys was a genuine hit, going platinum and generating the Top 40 "Hold On Loosely."

Every member of .38 Special seemed to give everything to this astounding performance. They invited the audience to stand and move forward, which many did with no need for a second prompting. Donnie Van Zandt (singer) incited the crowd into a near frenzy of tangible energy with his engaging performance that included constant movement and a freeness of spirit. Danny Chauncey (guitarist) aroused a reverence within the audience with his uninhibited and purely emotional ability to wield his guitar. Larry Junstrom (bass guitar) with his pristine playing and deft ability's brought wave after wave of tumultuous sound and beat.

The J-frame .38 Special was immensely popular from its inception, especially among law enforcement and civilians, but even aircrews often used them because of the size and weight. Several variations followed: the shrouded hammer Bodyguard (Model 49) and the hammerless Centennial (Model 40). Airweight variations having aluminum alloy frames were developed on the three basic forms: Chiefs Special Airweight Model 37, Bodyguard Airweight Model 38, and the Centennial Airweight Model 42. In 1965, the Chiefs Special was rendered in stainless steel and designated the Model 60, becoming the first stainless steel handgun.
