The members of 3 Doors Down retreated back to their hometown in Mississippi to record the follow-up to their unexpectedly massively successful debut. Out of the public eye, the group was able to create a no-nonsense album of melodic hard-rock -- one that brought them even more success. The lead-off single "When I'm Gone" is indicative of their commercial strengths.

If you were alive and even semi-conscious in the year 2000, you undoubtedly heard "Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down. It was inescapable. The song and the debut album from which it leapt, The Better Life, defied the laws of gravity. Both clung to the top of any given chart--album, singles, multi-format radio--for most of that year and beyond. "Kryptonite," in more ways than one, was like the dude Brad Arnold was singing about: Superman. The song struck a huge literal and figurative chord with the populace, a full year before America truly needed a superhero.

In 1997, they released their self-titled album "3Doors Down". This album was the one they mainly did as their demo CD that they would sold at their gigs. They started to become more popular and the local radio station started getting many requests to play their music. After being heard, they got a record deal with Republic records, which is a branch off Universal Records. Some of the songs off the album were released as singles such as "Kryptonite" and "Loser".
