24: The Game

I’ve found another quite good review of the 24: Game, which has been available in the U.S. for a fortnight or so, and in the U.K. since friday. Eventually I’ll put up a dedictaed section, but until then…

As a game, 24 The Game is absolutely horrible, an unfinished, barely playable, multigenre wreck. But judged as a lost season of 24, the game fares notably better. In this sense, 24 The Game is simultaneously one of the best and worst licensed titles to hit in some time.

A shadow of the spectacular TV show, 24: The Game is a poorly executed adaptation that won't satisfy the fans by any stretch of the imagination. It's a real shame that the game hasn't made the grade, especially since the TV show has many of the qualities that would make for a really good videogame.

The game isn't very hard but it can be frustrating at times. During the driving sequences if you take the wrong turn or run into the wrong building it could spell instant defeat since your suspect can get away. Just be prepared to play the majority of the levels more than once.

Button-based mini-games bring up the rear of the game. Most of these are simple and require you to move the analog stick or press buttons at certain times. One common mini-game has you rerouting a connection to a certain node, which you control by pressing the face buttons. It's interesting, even if most of them are too easy. Another one is arranging letters to form a certain pattern. Like before, these can be too easy.

Everything that is wonderful about the TV show has been meticulously re-created for the game. Instead of simply retelling events fans of the show have already watched, this high-octane title tells a new day’s events that occur between seasons 2 and 3 and features the likenesses and voice acting of the entire cast. The production is decent, nailing the feel of the show.
