24 Hour Fitness: Clubs
built 188 days ago
Not all 24 Hour Fitness clubs are open 24 hours. Additionally, some clubs have taken out equipment or extras. For example, the club in the Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego, California, was forced by property management to remove their jacuzzi, leaving only the shower and locker room in addition to the exercise equipment. Complaints were met by being told that one could simply go to another club, which ignores the fact that many people join fitness clubs for their convenient location. Additionally, at another San Diego club on Balboa Avenue, racquetball courts were removed.
Snap Fitness, a 24-hour fitness club, recently opened its first location in Washington County. The facility offers 24-hour, daily access for members over age 16, who receive personal door-access cards - a convenience for busy individuals who want to stay active and fit.
According to press accounts in 2005, McCown De Leeuw retained Merrill Lynch & Co. to seek out buyers for 24 Hour Fitness. The New York Post reported, "Firms such as Apollo Advisors, Bain Capital, Cerberus Capital Management and Texas Pacific Group are said to be interested in taking a look at the fitness outfit. Other potential buyers could include some hotel, leisure and recreation companies. Buyout firms are drawn to health clubs because they have proven to be stable cash flow generators, and ... generally reflect high returns on investment." By May the company had found a buyer in Forstmann Little & Co., which had pledged $1.6 billion to take control, planning to continue to operate and grow the 24 Hour Fitness chain.
The 24 Hour Fitness Super-Sport Club locations are generally over 50,000 square feet. In addition to the Sport Club features, they can have additional features like larger group exercise rooms and classes. Ultra-Sport locations are over 100,000 square feet, offer executive locker rooms, day spas, towel services, whirlpools, rock climbing walls, and racquetball courts.
"When clients sign up to join a 24 Hour Fitness facility, the club represents to them that its staff is equipped to handle medical emergencies. It has been a full three years since the American Heart Association declared that all health clubs should be equipped with AEDs. At this point, there can be no excuse for the failure to provide this equipment. 24 Hour Fitness is responsible for the needless death of Nick Pombra."
SAN FRANCISCO—24 Hour Fitness was hit with a class action lawsuit for allegedly engaging in illegal and deceptive billing practices. Jennifer Pickering, a 25-year-old legal assistant, sued the health club chain for charging her $48 for two extra months of membership fees after she quit and not reimbursing her $239 for four unused personal training sessions.
