21 Grams

Reel commentary: ....."21 grams" refers to the amount of weight that a person is purported to lose at the precise moment of death. Some believe this is the weight of the soul, and others a natural, physiological occurrence; the actuality is unknown. But this good, weighty film speaks for itself, title aside, and is just a step or two shy of being great....[F]ull review

The speech goes on to attempt some sort of comprehension of those 21 grams. Is it the soul? Where does it go? And what stays behind? How much goes with those 21 grams, and if this is a true statement or not, is something the viewer must leave to Iñárritu and his production. What one can weigh... is the directors ability to deliver an Oscar-winning (and deserving) film, and to yet again electrify and stir with the emotions of any variety of audience.

For his second feature 21 Grams, after the Oscar-nominated Amores Perros, director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu decided to try filmmaking Stateside. For this adventure he maintained many of his prior Mexican collaborators, including screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto. He describes the group as a “Mexican gang,” and compares their “sound” to that of Ron Wood and Keith Richards.

There are moments when the long arm of coincidence seems to stretch pretty far in 21 Grams, though in retrospect the movie is much more about weak choices and sequences of causality than is initially apparent. Paul, too, uses Fate as an alibi: "There are so many, many things that have to happen for two people to meet."
