21 Grams: Sean Penn

21 Grams is a film that, arguably, doesn't end terribly well (the final Sean Penn monologue feels too pat). But of course, where anything ends, or begins, remains the film's central question.

The key actors in “21 Grams” are uniformly first-rate with Sean Penn running the gamut from being the picture of health to a man ravaged be a failing heart. Benicio del Toro is a terrific presence always and is truly fine as a man who believes he has found his life’s true path but loses it in a horrible moment. Naomi Watt is proving to be an acting force, given the right role, and tears your heart out, at times, as the grieving Chris.

Director Alejandro Gonzalez, finds a way of combining the lives of three characters, Sean Penn, Paul Rivers a mathematics professor on his deathbed, Naomi Watts, Cristina Peck a recently widowed mother, and Benicio Del Toro, Jack Jordan a born-again Christian, into a film that has you on edge for the entire 124 minutes.
